Saint Michael Conquering the Devil – by…. Raphael

Today is the feast of Saint Michael –  and of Raphael and Gabriel. When in doubt, call on an archangel – the real ones, not the strange New Age angels. Saint Michael, who crushes the devil, Raphael the healer and Gabriel the messenger are all of such great comfort.

The archangels remind us also of our shared heritage with the Jewish people – the suffix    ‘-el’ means ‘of God’. The names of the archangels mean as follows: Michael – ‘who is like God?’; Raphael, the healer of the tale of Tobit: ‘God has healed’;  Gabriel: ‘God is my strength’.  And the name of Christ, Emmanuel, means: ‘God with us’.

Archangel Raphael with Bishop Domonte – Bartolomé Esteban Murillo

Saint Michael Archangel,
defend us in battle,
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
may God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, cast into hell
Satan and all the evil spirits

That should do the trick….
