Jasmine and Rose

What’s the spring-breathing jasmine and rose ?
What’s the summer with all its gay train
Or the splendour of autumn to those
Who’ve bartered their freedom for gain?

Dick Gaughan – Both Sides the Tweed

I  am now fascinated by the concept of jasmine and rose and how it links to Catholic iconography. Jasmine and roses are often planted together in gardens and seem to be a favourite flower arrangement. Roses, we know, are strongly associated with Our Lady. Jasmine seems to be associated with purity. In one painting, angels are offering wreaths of jasmine and roses to the Madonna and Child.

It seems to be a popular name for ladies, businesses and streets, going by the Internet. Ah, and of course the Flower Duet from Lakmé is…

Dôme épais le jasmin

Sous le dôme épais où le blanc jasmin

À la rose s’assemble,

À la rose s’assemble,

Thick dome of jasmine

Under the dense canopy where the white jasmine,

Blends with the rose,

Blends with the rose,

Here it is. I’ve had this for years and years. Fancy that.
