View of Toledo

This immensity is indescribable and because of it the soul is dying of love : St John of the Cross, Spiritual Canticle

This is El Greco’s other landscape view of Toledo, his adopted home for so long.  It contains, below the Alcazar (castle), the priory wherein St John of the Cross was held captive for nine months and where he wrote the best part of his Spiritual Canticle.
