Sedes Sapientiae  – From the Church of St. Josef (Lang-Göns), Germany

In the lap of the mother shines the wisdom of the father…….

And does it not do the heart good to know that in the old German/Latin carol, In dulci jubilo ( known best in the modern form of Good Christian Men, Rejoice…) are the lines:

In dulci jubilo,
Nun singet und seid froh!
Unsers Herzens Wonne
Leit in praesepio;
Und leuchtet wie die Sonne
Matris in gremio.
Alpha es et O!

In sweet rejoicing,
now sing and be glad!
Our hearts’ joy
lies in the manger;
And it shines like the sun
in the mother’s lap.
You are the alpha and omega!

[sourceHear it here sung by the choir of King’s College, Cambridge.

UPDATE: Today (18 November), with a cheery smile, I heard this carol sung in English in the radio production of Shadowlands – a play about CS Lewis and Joy Gresham….and I remember also, that this week, the 50th anniversary of Lewis’ death, there will be a series of events commemorating the writer and his works, culminating in the unveiling of a memorial to Lewis in Poets’ Corner in Wesminster Abbey.  Lovely.
