The Pearl of Scotland – Saint Margaret

Today is the feastday of, among other saints, Saint Margaret of Scotland and Saint Gertrude the Great of Helfta. The first was Queen of Scotland, famed for her piety and charity. The second was an Abbess, mystic, scholar, writer and teacher.  One was a woman with a public mission, a wife and mother, a widow and bereaved mother. The other was enclosed, visionary, devout.  Also celebrated on this day is Saint Agnes of Assisi ( sister of Saint Clare), who ran away to join the convent...

Saint Gertrude of Helfta

In this month of the Holy Souls, here is the prayer of Saint Gertrude for the Souls in Purgatory:

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
