Two Astonishing Sculptures of Saint Cecilia

Stefano Maderno’s Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia, Church of St. Cecilia, Rome

Legend has it that, when exhumed in 1599, Saint Cecilia’s body was incorrupt and bore the marks of the axe that was the instrument of her martyrdom.  Stefano Maderno testified that his sculpture (above) was of the Saint’s body as he had seen it.
