Saint Dorothy

Francisco de Zurbaran

On her way to her martyr’s death, Saint Dorothea of Caesarea was taunted by the lawyer Theophilus: “Bride of Christ, send me an apple and some roses from the Paradise of your Bridegroom.”  As she prayed before her execution, an angel appeared before her in the form of a child  and gave her three apples and three roses on a pure linen cloth, which she asked him to send to Theophilus. The lawyer was himself converted and he too died a martyr’s death.

Saint Dorothy is the patron saint of all these good things: horticulture; brewers; brides; florists; gardeners; midwives; newlyweds; love.

Today is also the feast of the Martyrs of Japan. We pray for those Christians persecuted and martyred around the world today. Please see the Aid to the Church in Need website for more information and how to help the work of the organisation.
