Ash Wednesday – The Burial of the Sardine – Francisco Goya

The ceremony of the burial of the sardine marks the end of Carnival and the beginning of Lent.

This painting is another of Goya’s terrifying masterworks- suitable for this time of dread, penance and reflection. It sums up humanity in a not-entirely cheerful way. God speed.
