Kindness may be unkind if it leaves a sting behind

Today is the feast day of Saint Katharine Drexel, socialite, heiress, philanthropist, religious sister, educator, and founder  of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.  A daughter of the wealthy Drexel family, she contributed over $20 million dollars to help poor Native Americans and African-Americans through missionary work and the foundation of Catholic schools and churches.

Katharine’s stepmother, Emma Drexel, taught her daughters to give charity with discretion. As she said:  “Kindness may be unkind if it leaves a sting behind.”
