Happy Saint Veronica’s Day

Robert Campin, 1375/1379–1444

Word is, Saint Veronica never existed and that her name is a corruption of vera icon – true icon. That is most disappointing – what then of the Sudarium, the Mandylion, the (if I dare mention it) The Shroud itself?  What of all the Veronica’s named after the good lady?

Console yourselves, there really was a Saint Veronica Giuliani (1660 -1727) – her feast was on 9 July.
