Saint Placid

St. Benedict orders Saint Maurus to the rescue of Saint Placidus –  Filippo Lippi

Well, that’s a reassuring name. He was a disciple of Saint Benedict and was miraculously saved from drowning by another monk, Saint Maurus. He shares patronage of Messina in Sicily, with Our Lady of the Letter; according to legend, the people of Messina, inspired by the teaching of Saint Paul, went to the Holy Land to seek the protection of the Virgin Mary and received a letter from our Lady herself. ” I bless you and your city” said the letter – and from then on the city has been under her protection. And quite right too.
