All Souls Day

All Souls Day in Myślenice, Poland

All Souls Day in many countries is a day to visit, celebrate and mourn one’s dead.  It is a feast of the Church – but in this country, we do little to remember our departed and certainly do nothing in public. I agree with the Pope’s recent stricture not to scatter the ashes of the dead; but then, I am old-fashioned, I think.

Life is for the living, certainly, but time as we experience it goes, as we know, back as well as forward – despite the teachings of the New Age, we cannot live in an eternal present. We are made of our experiences and of the love we received and gave, including love from and love to those now gone. In the drear month of November, churches pray for the departed and for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.  We should not cease to remember.

Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord
and let perpetual light shine upon them

May they rest in peace. Amen.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
